New Update Addressing “Netcode” Rolling Out

UPDATE 6/5: We’ve received several questions regarding which Battlefield 4 servers that have seen an increased tick rate after the netcode update. To clarify, the tick rate is increased on ALL servers.

UPDATE 6/4: The “Netcode” patch has been released and is now available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Please proceed to start your respective console and download the latest update.

We’re happy to announce that we’ve released an update for PC, PS3, and X360 consoles today containing the new improved “Netcode” for Battlefield 4. The update will be released later this week on PS4 and Xbox One.

This update has been developed using the CTE (Community Test Environment) on PC (you can sign up if you haven’t done so already at http://cte.battlelog.com), and is the first update being deployed using your gameplay feedback.

The number of changes possible in this update would be difficult to pull off without the continued support from our community, both through direct constructive feedback and telemetry data gathered on the CTE.

High Frequency Network Update

For the PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms, we are adding something we nicknamed the “High Frequency Bubble”.

Within a certain radius of the player, we add the possibility to update the clients at a higher rate from the server. What this essentially means is that the server will update the client on what is happening more often than before. This normally results in a smoother, more “correct” player experience.

netcode blog

The High Frequency Update is by default turned OFF in this release. You will have to enable this setting to take advantage of the improved networking. To support players with a limited bandwidth connection, we support three different levels: LOW, MEDIUM and HIGH. Most players with a connection faster than 1Mbit upload and 1Mbit download should be fine using the HIGH setting. If you experience any issues, lower or turn off the setting completely.

Playstation 4 & Xbox One Server Performance

The High Frequency Update will be rolled out to all 48 player servers and on a small set of 64 player servers immediately. We will then keep a close eye on the larger servers to make sure server performance stays good in the live environment. If all goes well, all servers will be supporting the high frequency update after 24 hours or rollout and testing.

Video Comparison

When testing our “High Frequency Bubble” changes to the network layer in Battlefield 4, we made sure to employ a measurable end-user experience metric. To do this, we have been using a 60fps video camera to capture two clients connected over the internet, and counting frames to get before and after results:

Future Plans

This is the first release to contain CTE-tested “Netcode” fixes and improvements. We are still hard at work with additional improvements and tweaks to better our network experience that did not make this release.

We hope to utilize the Community Test Environment for future release to ensure quality and stability across all platforms. If you wish to take part in this testing, the CTE still has slots open. The current requirement is to own a PC copy of Battlefield 4 with a Premium memebership to sign up at http://cte.battlelog.com

None of the things you said you fixed have been fixed EA….. Ever since your so called “fixes”, I have been getting killed behind cover, even when I can’t see the enemy, I am lagging horrifically more ever since the update, NEVER DID BEFORE IT BY THE WAY, some PDW’s are killing me in one, HIT, and seriously , a “frequency bubble’? Doesn’t help player movement at all, especially Rotations, I had a guy shoot me in the head, WITH HIS BACK TURNED TO ME…. I hate you so much EA….. If you gave DICE time to finish before launch, NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED…. seriously, f_u_c_k you EA, you money hungry aholes.

How about living up to your promise to the consumer and release these
updates on ALL platforms that this bs game is on, not just Xbox one, ps4 and PC.
Funny how you will only release game altering updates on platforms that will support
hardline, isn’t it. Its complete bs and very fuc*ed up.

  • lestatswos 06.27.14 at 14:04

Battlefield 4 is dead, there are no more new content since March, I’m bored!!

  • x13roger 06.26.14 at 20:08

Nothing has changed here for me I’m on fast fibre optic connection and have tried all the settings still frame drops on large games which I no longer try to play. Rubberbanding is still there freezing whilst going up ladders or not letting you get off at the top. Emptying entire clips into people and not getting hit markers, still getting hit round corners, No rendering at the beginning of the game ( halfway across the map with no gun!!!) constantly crashing the ps4… what else… over writing the campaign information

Somehow I don’t think hardline will sell too well.

In this day and age when money is tight all across the world and your asking many people to spend twice as much as usual you really need to up your game.

I would expect to buy a car that doesn’t come with wheels or the lights not work or to have to wait 3 months for an engine…….

And lastly while I’m out shopping in town trying to buy another one of your half finished products ,according to the physics of your game I wouldn’t actually be able to make it through the doorway to the store because I’d get stuck on a 2″ step have to look down to see what the fuck is going on and get shot in the back.

  • TaylorVasquezXx- 06.25.14 at 07:53

  • xXHunters 06.12.14 at 00:11

what about the issue where after recently buying bf4 it is impossible to play and comes up with this error

We’re sorry, it looks like your game didn’t start properly.

Please follow the steps below and try start the game after each one:
    Restart Origin
    Repair the game in Origin
    Restart your computer

  • rshamr 06.10.14 at 12:25

yeah… bla bla bla… and NS for PS3 is still unplayable 2 months on….

  • szrz 06.09.14 at 19:02

15 years ago alll games I played were perfect in terms of netcone , nowadays dice introduced new type of problem , netcode and hitreg completely fuckedup

  • booker_64 06.07.14 at 16:07

DICE, your efforts in trying to make the multilayer experience better and better is greatly appreciated, I mean it.

But I believe one of your CTEs principles for netcode upgrade – that is to make MP play best for people with bad connections is futile.

It would be the same if you’d try to make your next gen Frostbite 4 or current 3rd engine to run on Pentium 4 PC or Playstation 2

Let’s face it – people have to upgrade their hardware in order to play newest games – this is true for consoles and PC world.

Why then drag this idea of an game with an epic data streams to be able to run smoothly on low quality internets?

Think about it. Perhaps you can implement server options so people with good internet can play together having quality experience with higher non “bubbled” Hz (above 30) and disallowing high ping ppl , and those who have low quality internet can too play together on low inet servers.

Instead of trying to mix us up together by lag compensation or network smoothing engines make some real revolution.

    Thanks

“Added controller option to swap functionality of the bumper and trigger buttons” Should of been in the first version.

  • Eddie Mancuso 06.04.14 at 01:20

It’s about time! I want to love this game…but you guys make it difficult to play. Why does it take so long to get it right?

    • aikideshi 06.04.14 at 01:21

I have the same sentiment, but unfortunately, I just tried this and cannot say that this has been fixed. Rubber banding is way worse now.

    • commiekiller99 06.05.14 at 01:11

very large game with a lot of potential causes for problems.if you should one thing it mess another up.ever heard of the domino effect?

  • Partnur 06.03.14 at 23:45

  • The50Cal 06.03.14 at 21:38

Ive been a huge Battlefield Fan since BF1942. And in my opinion BF3 and BF4 are the worst FPS games I have ever played. And I have to buy more expansion packs to play this broke ass game. Bullet velocity is a joke. DEV people read a Lee’s Hand reloading book for proper ballistic FPS/MPS 5.56×45 FMJ travels 2800-3100 FPS. You have them at 1500-1800 FPS. Might as well be Battlefield AIRSOFT. I have put my time in, I’ve played enough to know this game is junk. I don’t have fun when I play. And congrats on fixing a issue that shouldn’t have really been a issue. I’m surprised we don’t have to pay for this FIX. Oh wait I would not want you actually taking advise from your actual consumers.

  • scrotalbatwing 06.03.14 at 21:16

Thanks for the hard work @DICE!!! Keep the updates and changes coming and really looking forward to renting my server on the PS4

  • Sbkg0003 06.03.14 at 21:15

    Way to late.

You better save your name now.

  • noochnasty 06.03.14 at 20:53

So glad they’re addressing these problems. Let’s hope they are permanent fixes and not just band aides though!!!

  • XxschmiperfixX 06.03.14 at 20:44

So Xbox 360 players will still get killed around walls? We waited 8 months for DICE to say that they discriminate against low end consoles. I consider myself a skilled battlefielder on the X360 but I can’t be great if im killed around solid objects or after I have ducked down behind cover. Unless this patch helps Xbox 360 with that matter, i’m not satisfied.

    • MMR0CKST4R78 06.04.14 at 03:25

Read it again. They released the update for the 360 today :)

  • e dagger 06.03.14 at 19:40

So xbox360 and ps3 are stuck with the ahit, I failed at making a proper fps game, net code?
It groups it in with the others but the specific updates say otherwise

  • guitargas123 06.03.14 at 19:31

    Finally!

    • aikideshi 06.04.14 at 01:04

I wish that were the case, rubber banding way worse now. Not sure if this game will ever get fixed at all.

  • Grozarom 06.03.14 at 19:12

    Good! #PS4

  • BrandonEdge325 06.03.14 at 19:10

Please fix the problem where the load out/kit resets every time you go to play the game

    • blazen67 06.03.14 at 19:22

for what system? i dont have that problem on PC

  • AnDiaMO 2 hELl 06.03.14 at 19:09

Has anyone else had issues with there loadouts resetting to something else when they switch servers? Its really starting to get on my nerves

    • ThexCanadian420 06.03.14 at 19:11

I have this happen to me every time I play. It even switches back game to game most of the time. This sucks because by the time you reset everything to the way you wanted it the enemy team is already at the mcom’s and no on is there to protect it.

    • BLADE DEATH117 06.03.14 at 19:34

all the freaking time!!! the only way around this that i have found is to use Battlelog’s Pre-Set Loadout options; which work great but it is pretty annoying having to sign into Battlelog every time i want to play

  • AudibleCurve7 06.03.14 at 19:06

Fix dawnbreaker! Its been fubar sence the game came out on the 360 I still haven’t been able to make it an entire game without being dropped

    • TheGabenuel 06.05.14 at 05:09

Dawnbreaker is so bugged on the 360 that every time I play on it, the game freezes my Xbox. With about three to five attempts on that map and so much XP down the drain, I’ve seriously started dropping any game that gets to Dawnbreaker. Worse yet, I don’t believe I’ve ever finished a game on Dawnbreaker, similar to you.

  • MMR0CKST4R78 06.03.14 at 19:06

So I won’t have to unload a whole clip just to kill someone?? And when are you gonna fix the ceiling glitch in metro? Tired of these vaginas who wanna cheat cause they suck at playing the game the way it’s meant to be played. I’ve reported the same guy like 20 times and u guys do nothing. What’s the point in having the report player option if you’re not gonna do anything about it?

    • Deadpool24851 06.03.14 at 19:52

      Amen!

    • patzivota 06.04.14 at 01:18

It takes EA/DICE time to investigate the player before taking any action. Reporting someone is only the first step. Don’t expect someone to get banned right after reporting them.

  • deerslayer0570 06.03.14 at 18:52

fix the dang aa guns or let us be able to get back in them tired of being base raped

  • Leki 06.03.14 at 18:51

great, now fix all these other problems in BF4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_B9a78HR1Y

  • dominicanboy100 06.03.14 at 18:43

Good thing I read this, my love and my passion coming back for bf4

  • LunaticGunner 06.03.14 at 18:37

Will there be a way for players to know if they are joining a High Frequency Server from the server browser?

  • LunaticGunner 06.03.14 at 18:35

Don’t take your foot off the accelerator DICE. Keep these kind of player feedback changes coming.

  • Thy Majestie 06.03.14 at 18:34

Is there going to be a fix so that the spot/communication function can be used on the mouse? It just flickers and disappears in less than a second. My mate uses it to reload with his mouse button but it doesn’t pick up enemy kits. It’s been broke since day of release. I can get a fix around it with AutoHotKey but I can get kicked/banned by PunkBuster for it, and I shouldn’t have to resort to this.

There’s also the location of the cursor being in the vicinity of “sorry” so spamming it to spot enemies makes it constantly say that.

  • charlybones 06.03.14 at 18:28

Great progress so far. 60% improvement is already an awesome start.

    Better late than never dice.

  • plinth 06.03.14 at 18:13

    FIX THE NE… oh…

  • OsyntraxO 06.03.14 at 18:12

    About damn time!!!

  • SethDarks 06.03.14 at 18:08

This should make the game 60% more enjoyable..

    • aikideshi 06.04.14 at 01:06

So far, it has not, rubber banding making biiiiig comeback after this. I had been telling my friends to hold on and fix will be coming, but I think joke’s on me.
