The Road to Battlefield 4: Every Game Mode Revealed

WHAT’S IN A TICKET?

Tickets are a shared team resource for respawning. 1 ticket = 1 respawn. So if your team has 100 tickets to share, after you have received 100 kills your team will be down to zero and lose the match. You can also continually bleed tickets in most game modes if the enemy controls more flags than you.

From the all-out vehicle warfare of Conquest to the frantic warfare found in the all-new Obliteration mode, Battlefield 4 offers the most diverse and fun multiplayer experience yet. As we prepare for launch, we wanted to tell you about the modes you’ll be playing in the Battlefield 4 Beta, as well as the other modes you will get to experience when Battlefield 4 launches later this year.

Battlefield 4 brings seven distinct game modes all playable on the ten exciting multiplayer maps – and all modes will be playable on all maps. By carefully zoning the playable combat areas, adapting flag layouts, and catering for a variety of gameplay styles, each map will  accomodate any game mode you wish to play. Read on for details on each of the game modes in Battlefield 4!

CONQUEST (Playable in the Battlefield 4 Beta)

BF4 Conquest Mode

TIME IS UP!

Most game modes have a default time limit to prevent matches from going on for too long without a conclusion. In game modes like Team Deathmatch and Squad Deathmatch, we also have an overtime feature to make sure that they don’t end in a draw and that a winner is declared.

Combat type: The definitive Battlefield mode –  All-out vehicle warfare mixed with intense infantry action across land, air and sea
Designed for: 24 players (X360, PS3) / 64 players (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
Commander mode: Optional
Conquest is the quintessential Battlefield mode and includes all-out vehicle warfare across land, air and sea. Engage in dogfights with jets, lay waste to the battlefield with tanks, patrol the rivers in attack boats, and engage in intense infantry combat. With its vast maps and wide array of available vehicles, Conquest truly lets you play your way. THIS is Battlefield!

The goal is simple; capture flags, eliminate enemy soldiers, and bring the enemy’s ticket count down to zero. The best way to do that is to make sure you own a majority of the available flags on the map. To capture flags you must be within a specific range. The more flags your team controls the faster your enemies’ respawn tickets will reduce. But be advised, your enemy can capture your flags at any time, turning the table and putting you on the offensive. The first team to bleed their opponent’s respawn tickets to zero are the victors.

DOMINATION (Playable in the Battlefield 4 Beta)

Combat type: Fast-paced infantry variant of Conquest
Designed for: 20 players (all platforms)
Commander mode: No
Domination is an intense, infantry only game mode that made its debut in Battlefield 3: Close Quarters. While sharing many of the elements of Conquest (capturing flags, bleeding your enemies’ tickets to zero), Domination is tighter and more focused. You’ll never be far from a flag, which means you’ll be constantly on the move and constantly in the thick of the action.

In contrast to Conquest, capturing flags is much quicker in Domination, and the ticket count is lower than in Conquest. You also lose tickets more slowly if you own a minority of the bases. This means that every kill made in Domination means much more for the outcome of the entire match than it does in Conquest.

OBLITERATION

BF4 Obliteration Mode

COMMANDER MODE

Turn the tide in the strategic Commander Mode. Learn more about how to direct your troops, scan the Battlefield, and deliver critical war assets in this blog post.

Combat type: Mad dash in vehicles and on foot to deliver explosives
Designed for: 24 (X360, PS3) 32 (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
Commander mode: Optional
We call this the ”Battlefield Moments Generator”. One of the two new game modes in Battlefield 4, Obliteration is definitely the most explosive! In Obliteration, a bomb spawns at a random location on the map. Both teams must fight to pick up the bomb, drop it off at one of their opponent’s three objectives, arm it, and destroy the objective. Once a bomb has detonated, the next one randomly spawns in a new location and the chaos starts all over. The game lasts until one team has detonated the other team’s three objectives. Obliteration can be devastatingly quick or a harrowing tug of war depending on how good your team is at staying together and delivering the bomb. Like most other game modes, there is usually also a time limit in place to make sure the match does not go on for too long.

Compared to Conquest, the action in Obliteration tends to be heavily focused on wherever the bomb is located. Since there’s only one bomb at a time, you will often find yourself going from attacker to defender in the blink of an eye. You need to be able to predict enemy movement to defend at the right place at the right time and reclaim the offensive – or intercept the enemy to reclaim possession of the bomb. The constantly shifting playing field from offense to defense is partly inspired by American football – with the detonation of an enemy installation being the Battlefield equivalent of scoring a touchdown.

DEFUSE

Combat type: Competitive close quarters combat
Designed for: 5 vs. 5 players (all platforms)
Commander mode: No
The other new game mode making its debut in Battlefield 4, Defuse is a highly competitive and lethal. Each player is given  a single life per round, every shot fired having the potential to drastically change the outcome. Teams can win by eliminating the enemy squad, or arming and detonating a military objective that they own (similar to the M-COM stations in Rush mode.)

Built from the ground up and designed to cater to the most competitive Battlefield players, Defuse provides a distinctly new flavor to Battlefield that stands in stark contrast to other modes like Rush and Conquest. Each player can only be revived once per round, and players who have been eliminated will be following the rest of the showdown from the sidelines.

TEAM DEATHMATCH

BF4 Team Deathmatch
Combat type: The classic shooter mode, Battlefield 4 style
Designed for: 20 players (all platforms)
Commander mode: No
Few game modes are as instantly recognizable as Team Deathmatch. The setup is deliciously simple: two teams face off in combat, with the first team to reach a preset number of kills emerging victorious. There’s nothing more to it – it’s the perfect game mode for when you’re short on time and crave instant action.

RUSH

BF4 Rush Mode
Combat type: Fight deep into enemy territory by detonating their M-COM stations
Designed for: 24 players (X360, PS3) 32 players (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
Commander mode: Optional
Another signature Battlefield multiplayer mode, Rush is an asymmetrical struggle between Attackers and Defenders. The goal is for the attacking team to arm and destroy two MCOM stations in each zone of the map. The defending team must stop this from happening before the run out of respawns. If the attacking team is successful, two more MCOM stations are spawned deeper on the map. Rush continues until the attacking team has destroyed all six of their enemies MCOMs, or when the defending team has successfully bled the attacking team’s respawn tickets dry. Often, a game of Rush will take you through a number of different environments, each asking you to reconsider your tactics and your loadout.

SQUAD DEATHMATCH

Combat type: Four squads fight on the ground with limited vehicle support in a race to the top of the leaderboard
Designed for: 20 players (all platforms)
Commander mode: No
In Squad Deathmatch, four squads face off in a battle to the top of the leaderboard. The first squad to reach the preset number of kills in each round is declared the winner. Squad Death Match is a mode that takes the immediate action from Team Deathmatch and doubles the number of participating teams to deliver an intense battle to see who will emerge victorious.

    It says that the game modes are DESIGNED for certain amount of players, doesn’t mean that servers can’t change the max player amount. (well at least hoping it’s that way)

    The Defuse game mode sounds a lot like your classic Counter Strike game mode.
    Question though: When you’re KIA and sitting on “the sidelines”, will you then be viewing the rest of the round in spectator mode or watching the tabletop view of the map?

    Obliteration, rush, and team death match should be at least 32 players. 64 players on rush I think would be mayhem you already know where the actions going to be so 16 on 16 should be ok the locations are not scattered like in conquest with battles in different areas so it makes sense. Squad deathmatch 4 teams of five just right, obliteration and team deathmatch how big are the maps going to be. I’m looking forward to bf4 on ps4, it will be my first 64 player match so I really can’t talk about player count but 20 to 24 players in those game modes just seems to low for next gen consoles and pc don’t you. Still gonna be sweet as hell.

    OK the update today seemed to have replaced the satchels with the old BF3 ammo and Med packs but it seems you cannot drop them on Obliteration mode now and the MG on the Support class is just iron sights now with the magnifier however when magnified you lose the center of the iron sight and cannot see any tracers on your rounds so it seems like you are not even firing….really odd choice guys.
    All my settings were reset too and the auto detect for graphics WAS choosing Ultra but now High?

    I agree rush should have more players if this is the final amount. It could easily be 64 players on the larger maps.

    I also have to say that I am a bit bummed about diffuse. I thought it would have been a large scale battle but with one life and no vehicle respawning, that would have been cool to me. 5v5 to me isn’t what battlefield is about IMO.

    It is nice to know that I can fall back on conquest seeing how that is gonna be pretty awesome not to mention obliteration was really great in the beta today. I really liked it and hope it will be just as nice on other maps.

    I will say, I am pretty disappointed that Rush isn’t 64 player. So it’s only conquest that is 64 player? Is that how it was on PC for BF3? Dang. So since I don’t play much conquest, there really isn’t gonna be much of a difference. Meh…

    Also sad to see there isn’t any squad rush, etc. No one ever played those game modes in BF3….which is sad, cause I would have really liked to play squad rush….but couldn’t really find any players/servers ever. I think squad rush would be an AWESOME competitive gaming mode. Way better than defuse I think. I don’t like the idea of only having one life. Just makes it too campy and honestly, I think it makes it WAY less tactical, strategic, and competitive. I come from playing competitive halo (mainly halo 3) and having to make well timed “pushes” and have good positioning/map awareness and controlling spawns/fighting out of spawns, etc. I think that’s way more competitive and tactical then only having one spawn in a game. I’ve never seen a single spawn game that people aren’t just basically sitting somewhere. It just discourages movement and actual strategy. Multiple spawns is much more fun to watch too for various reasons…its just more dynamic.

    That being said, glad they’re adding it though. The more the merrier.

    I have two things to say one i heard that there was going to be 9 gamemodes at launch and there is only 7 and second i am dissapointes at the player counts as i have always played on console i was looking forward to higher player counts and more epic battles on the new consoles

    I am alongtime Battlefield player and retired Army (22yrs), after playing BF3 for a long time, I would like to address things my friends and I would like to see changed to be more real.
    1. Get rid of the hand torch that can burn thru vehicles
    2. Make all weapons damage accurate to the caliber round fire.
    3. shooting pistols more than 50 feet with accuracy not true
    4. When Javelins lock on, there a guided missile, not affected by flares5.
    5. Get rid of these level 100 modders playin with aim bot
    6. When shooting any 50 caliber machine gun on vehicles there should be no hit markers on enemy soldier, one 50 cal round will kill an individual
    7. When planting C4 and exploding it , the individual should be more than 100 meters away otherwise he should be killed to.

    I think player counts above what each mode is designed for should only be playable Unranked. That would still give you the option to play using those broken clusterf**k settings but without it messing up the stats system.

    I disagree with Squad Deathmatch – it was one of the least popular game modes in BF3, and with only a 1 in 4 chance of winning, not very fun. I would have rather seen Squad Rush instead. I would rather see CTF come back sooner, rather than like End Game. There are so many possibilities for playing CTF on new maps! Even Shanghai

    here’s an idea, dice! Why don’t you rename TDM to “close quarters” and make another game mode called TMD that’s like conquest but without flags, and instead of tickets there kills. I think that would be a very popular gamemodes, because honestly I don’t like how we have no vehicles in the current TDM, and small maps; Close quarters would have that.

    Why are the player counts multiples of 4 not of 5? There are 5 man squads and player counts like 64 won’t allow every squad to have 5 people in it. Surely going from 64 to 70 won’t be that much of an additional stress on the servers or platforms.

    I see DEFUSE being play less by many so after launch. Only ones I see playing are clans with active players that work together. Not many random people will join because there are to many people that don’t like to help their team. They run around with Medics but never drop Medpacks or Revive others. It seems like a fun game mode, but having to sit out after dieing even though there was a medic right next to you that would not revive ya is gonna piss many people off.

    OBLITERATION is what I’m most looking forward to… And glad they brought RUSH over to BF4. That was my favorite game mode in BF3.

        Also, conquest should be 35 vs. 35. If you notice, these numbers are due to up to 5 man squads. And yes, I see that’s what the current servers are designed for, but it would be nice if DICE and EA could change this before the game releases, but it’s more likely to be something with either rent-a-servers, or a future update.

    Having played Battlefield for ages, I think that Conquest is the most boring of all modes, and should be removed. I am glad the beta comes with Domination though, that one is more fair (but BF3 had too little amount of levels for it to feel fun).

    Okay so first off, no Onslaught Mode or even any mention of some sort of co-op survival mode. That’s severely disappointing. And next up what is with the severe limits on player numbers for the other game modes? Conquest is like the only game mode that appears to support the full 64. I’m hoping these player limits are only the default settings for servers and that Rented Servers will have the player limits adjustable.

      well, they said a while ago that they weren’t gonna do a co-op mode so that they could fully focus on the single- and multiplayer. as for the player counts, these player counts make up what are considered “official ranked” servers, where the settings are within guidelines that make it a ranked match. if you increased the ticket or player count on, for example, rush, to a very large number, then i believe that makes it something kind of like an unranked match (check out here: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Battlefield-4-Servers-Ranked-Based-on-User-Option-Tweaking-Says-DICE-380412.shtml). i do like the whole “official ranked” server thing so that I can hopefully filter between the two types. i’m honestly not gonna miss the co-op mode though

      I logged in just to clear things up for ya…the “number of players” is only a recommended number, PC/XBOXONE/PS4 will be able to adjust server settings to have 64 player team death match – for example.

      battlefield isn’t supposed to be an entirely realistic game. you want a realistic/authentic military game play ARMA. if you’re having trouble with a guy flying in circles, break off and wait for him to straighten out. but this game, while realistic in some aspects, is not supposed to be a military simulator

    Fundamental issues that must be given priority, then fixed:
    1) in game VOIP for anyone in your squad…not just your battlelog friends list
    2) Joining “FRIENDS” when clicking on the “JOIN FRIEND” button. This does not mean put me on the opposite team or a different squad. Could “kick player from squad” be invoked by sensing that an imcoming player has the same tags as the soldiers currently IN the squad?

    Honestly looking forward to the Oct 1 Beta and BF4 gameplay. Nice work Dice Guys

      This. I cannot emphasize more how important in-game squad and commander(for the squad leader) based VoIP is. It allows the coordination that makes commander mode not a waste of coding. I haven’t seen much information about it lately and VoIP WILL make or break this game.

    Seriously…conquest is the only game type with 64 players? That is really stupid. Why isn’t rush getting 64 players or Team Death Match? This is really dumb and I have to say I’m disappointed. I hope you guys change this.

      Are YOU serious? Just because they say they are “designed” for certain players means NOTHING. It was like this in BF3 and servers are allowed to add more players.

    It’s unfortunate that you give very little attention to SQUAD DEATHMATCH. The current incarnation of SDM in BF3 is incredibly fun and competitive, but the number of people who play SDM is really low. This is likely due to the horribly buggy and confusing scoreboard where you can only see the top four people in your squad. The list of bugs goes on and on for SDM, yet it’s still a blast and requires serious skill.

    PLEASE improve the SDM experience in BF4 from what exists today in BF3 … and then PROMOTE IT.

    For a game that brags about teamplay this and that, only half of the gamemodes can use Commander mode?? And what about VOIP? Keeping clan-members and players in the same party on the same team and in the same squad?

    I REALLY hope the latter has been fixed in BF4 … as it is now, if I try to play the game with friends (with the same clan tag, in the same party, AND using the ‘Join’ button in Battlelog), it’s all but guaranteed that we end up on different teams.

    This game is about TEAMWORK. Please enable us to play as a team, in a squad with built-in VOICE communication.

    Anyone know if BF2-style VOIP is back for squads in BF4??

    They’re DESIGNED for 32 player. Didn’t stop people from jamming 64 players into Rush servers on BF3.

    Also Defuse seems to be an attempt at competing with Counter-Strike. Battlefield wants to be ALL the shooters.

      well people have been asking DICE for a more competitive game mode since BF3 came out, so Defuse is that game mode, and DICE isn’t the only one who’s done a single-life game mode

      I’m fine with that. Nothing wrong with options. BF3 did do some “COD-esque” (if you can even call it that) things or game modes…and I’m glad. Just wish it didn’t fragment it as much. No one plays the BF3 expansions I feel like. Hard to find a good server.

      Other than that though I think its awesome. The variance in gameplay and types and modes is great. I play mostly Rush…..but I like having the other ones available to switch things up.

        well, it’s supposed to be more competitive, so there won’t be that many casual players running around. the single revive (and hopefully if people use squad voice chat) should encourage people to actually think of what’s around them before they try to rambo-revive their entire squad while bullets are flying by

      battlefield is a team oriented game, it’s not CoD with tight maps and score-hungry 12 year olds. you’re meant to play with a team and work with them to take objectives. the only game mode this doesn’t apply to as much (but you still could use it) is team deathmatch.

      TDM has always be designed for low player count. I suspect you can change the server settings to allow more.
