“Matches” Feature Coming to Battlefield 3

Update: The “Matches” feature is now live!

We’re taking the next step in advancing online competitive play in the Battlefield 3 community. The “Matches” feature will allow players to coordinate competitive multiplayer sessions with their friends and squad members. Battlefield 3 players will be able to select the time, server, game settings, and roster for their Matches creating a controlled and definitive environment for competitive play.

Players will be able to coordinate Matches for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 through the Battlelog. To coordinate a Match a player must be actively renting a dedicated server. Once a dedicated server has been selected the Match host can set the Match name, start time, game mode, team size, and map rotations.

After these preliminary decisions have been made, game settings are determined for the Match. Matches are completely customizable; an extensive list of settings including friendly fire, 3D spotting, squad-leader spawning, kill cam, health regeneration, a list of weapon unlocks that will be made available to players, and more can be set to exact specifications.

With the Match settings in place, players then select the rosters for their teams from their list of friends and platoon members. A team leader for the rival team is assigned who in turn also chooses a roster for the opposing team. With the teams set, the Match is scheduled for creation and players can begin taking their places.

Before the Match begins players may engage in a Warm-up Phase where no kills or points are counted. The Match will stay in this state until all participating players have signaled that they are ready from the pause menu.

After the Match is completed players can review the results on Battlelog. Players can see the number of rounds played, what maps were used, the team that won each round, and other relevant information.

With Matches, Battlefield 3 players will be able to create, control, and track directly competitive online play. Platoons, friends, and rivals will be able to put their teamwork to the test in controlled environments laying claim to definitive superiority and creating new grudges.

And why didnt this exist when the game first was released? Most ppl that was interested in BF3 for competetive gaming has moved on to other games..

This is a step in the right direction, great! BF3 is an amazing game and it’s great if we can see more clans out there. Competitive gaming works in BF3! However, we still need spectator mode and that is the most important thing today.

Jesus these comments are abysmal. Worse than Mordor? I think so.

This is a fantastic feature and it’s great to finally see it. One question though Crash, could you please clarify whether only the owner of a server can sort matches or whether server admins as a whole can? It would be MUCH better if admins could too, a setting perhaps to disallow or allow the feature for other admins?

Everyone with the server credentials can create a match. As you can see in the first picture you need Server name, Rcon port, and Rcon password. :)

DICE, Please respond to this suggestion.

I have been posting this on a semi-regular basis sinch launch, in attempts to get you guys to at least acknowledge it.

One of (if not the most) crucial element that makes a game mode ‘hardcore’, is the ABSENCE of the minimap.

Please allow the minimap to be removed in custom servers while keeping ALL other HC settings (most importantly, hardcore’s 60% health) ….. WHILE KEEPING THE MATCH RANKED (that’s the important part).

This is a big issue for hardcore players that like myself, who were let down by the inclusion of the minimap in hardcore to begin with. In my opinion, the minimap should be removed from the hardcore mode in general as well, but should you not do that, then again, allow the hardcore community to do so in 60% health/hardcore custom games.

The custom servers need more flexibility overall, while keeping the matches RANKED. IMO, you should be able to edit ANY parameter with the only restriction being player health possibly. Maybe the lowest allowable level would be 30%, as I can understand your boosting concerns of people setting health at 1% and getting a billion kills/points. The bottom line is that players should be able to create and play a more harsh/realistic style of game play and get people to play those servers, but right now, most people won’t because the games are unranked. So if you rent and set up a server this way, there it will sit…..empty.

Why not give the player the option to play both very different styles of RANKED game play, as you have always done in prior games (BFBC2)? This change would also be very simple to do on your end (DICE), as it’s not code intensive, it’s just a server-side setting for the most part. It’s not like I’m asking you to change some character animations or something complex like that.

IMPORTANT: These server changes WILL NOT IMPACT other core players and even hardcore players that do like to play with the minimap, since they will still be able to play custom games that have HC settings + the minimap. So whether you’re a core, ‘hardcore lite’, or a true hardcore player, you really can’t argue with this logic, in any way.

    Other wishlist items:

Please use the conquest flag capturing indicator that is in BFBC2. Do not bring up the large circular ‘C’ meter right in the middle of the screen just above the gun’s sights, as it just obscures the player’s view even more. Just stick with BFBC2′s audible ‘ticking’ meter at the bottom left hand side of the screen.

Please remove the names of the conquest capture points/flags (warehouse, docks, etc.) and just stick with A,B,C,etc. these names just obscure the players view, specially in longer/narrower maps. The names do very little for the player, as I’ve never had an issue in communicating with my squad that “I’m capturing Alpha”, for example. If you want/need to include the names, just leave them on the full-size map while in the spawn/pause screen.

    Thanx.

Once again EA/Dice spit on the needs of this game to put an effort towards an absolutely unnecessary feature. Dice, for the love of god, go back to the drawing board and fix the basics like netcode, objects in all facets, and detection of the numerous hacks that run rampant with nothing to stop them. Cheaters don’t care if you reset their stats. They can just cheat and get the stats back. I highly doubt that if a person paid for unlocks you take those free unlocks away with a stat wipe. Battlerecorder and the similar tools are all you need to even mention to us players. Save the wasting of our money for ridiculous features that don’t fix the game inside your development community so we don’t have to feel like you ripped us off every step of the way.

  • dpg70 07.05.12 at 23:54

So, just the actual server owner can do this, or any admin on the server? Way to cover the details DICE.

  • CoNNoUK 07.05.12 at 23:26

You need an Objective mode like close S&D, spec mode, weapon restriction. then you can say your competitive.

  • crozoki3001 07.05.12 at 23:07

    as has been said before.
This will NEVER be a competitive game without battlerecords and spectator mode or killcams.
ESL is full of cheaters, here will be even more.
So Zh1nto you skinny bitch do something.

    • crozoki3001 07.05.12 at 23:12

because i have paid for this game, I never gave you the money so you can make a fool out of me.
i want battlerecord like in bf2 or killcam like in cod, when you have already made bastard between cod and bf give us killcam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Krov7 07.05.12 at 22:35

This is a great feature, thank you EA/DICE! To build off even further, any teams that are looking for a professionally sponsored league/tournament environment, check out the PCGN League! http://www.pc-gamers.net

  • FsT-meni 07.05.12 at 21:27

Is this a joke? I say this because platforms of gaming like Electronic Sports League (ESL) u others we can coordinate the “Matches” years ago from now. This never will be and advance with competitive in any way because is already invented. Competitive players are joining tournaments in league in that platforms before mentionen and coordinate the match with the rival.

Battlefield 3 NEED Spectador Mode and Battlfield Rercorder. With out this two things you can call whatever you want “advance in competitive mode” but it isn’t.

    • SickVance 07.05.12 at 21:48

      Absolutely agree.
      Where the phuk is Battlerecorder?

    • LennartDenmark 07.05.12 at 22:35

Now this is the complete truth. I really hope DICE soon will implement what was needed from the getgo: spectating and demo recorder. In eye spectating as a priority of course, but chances are that the engine can’t handle that just like Unreal Engine, blegh. (insert sad face here)

    • NioXin 07.05.12 at 23:17

SPectator mode is essential for competitive play for sure… Theres no way to view the game otherwise. DICE lift your game, get a team onto this feature full time. as a PREMIUM member this is my demand.
