“Matches” Feature Coming to Battlefield 3

Update: The “Matches” feature is now live!

We’re taking the next step in advancing online competitive play in the Battlefield 3 community. The “Matches” feature will allow players to coordinate competitive multiplayer sessions with their friends and squad members. Battlefield 3 players will be able to select the time, server, game settings, and roster for their Matches creating a controlled and definitive environment for competitive play.

Players will be able to coordinate Matches for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 through the Battlelog. To coordinate a Match a player must be actively renting a dedicated server. Once a dedicated server has been selected the Match host can set the Match name, start time, game mode, team size, and map rotations.

After these preliminary decisions have been made, game settings are determined for the Match. Matches are completely customizable; an extensive list of settings including friendly fire, 3D spotting, squad-leader spawning, kill cam, health regeneration, a list of weapon unlocks that will be made available to players, and more can be set to exact specifications.

With the Match settings in place, players then select the rosters for their teams from their list of friends and platoon members. A team leader for the rival team is assigned who in turn also chooses a roster for the opposing team. With the teams set, the Match is scheduled for creation and players can begin taking their places.

Before the Match begins players may engage in a Warm-up Phase where no kills or points are counted. The Match will stay in this state until all participating players have signaled that they are ready from the pause menu.

After the Match is completed players can review the results on Battlelog. Players can see the number of rounds played, what maps were used, the team that won each round, and other relevant information.

With Matches, Battlefield 3 players will be able to create, control, and track directly competitive online play. Platoons, friends, and rivals will be able to put their teamwork to the test in controlled environments laying claim to definitive superiority and creating new grudges.

What would make this imo already great game even better is a battlerecorder! Especially for competitive matches, but also for recording great clips and games without having to buy an HDPVR for consoles or the risk of not recording something cool. If it would be possible to put this in the game that would be amazing.

  • Scorpain 07.12.12 at 03:24

Sweeeet. Just make sure we can see -at the end- kill/deaths against every individual player!!! :P

  • limitless4u 07.12.12 at 01:23

    waste of time

  • Tycho69 07.11.12 at 14:44

Yea, but what about the “battle recorder” ???

  • FreakyOmenPL 07.11.12 at 00:00

    Finally ;)

  • kRuSnIk420 07.10.12 at 21:53

    Can’t see match history
    Can’t cancel created match

  • HolidayForHire 07.10.12 at 19:23

They seriously need to allow support for more than 2 maps. Almost EVERY scrim played right now is at a minimum of 3 maps, if not 5.

  • STR33TS75 07.10.12 at 14:01

So if I’m playing in PC can I coordinate a match with people playing on PS3?

  • Phrodgar 07.10.12 at 08:17

That´s the biggest shit ever! I think that admins will (more than now) ban all types of weapons and other things, they cannot play with it. I want to say, this time they say “on my server are not allowed shotguns, c4 and campers (=sniper) and many other things” because they can´t play with these ELEMENTS of that game. With that new tool they can make more problems to other players. And we shouldn´t forget: Alle the things, adminds normaly ban from there own server, are a part of this game and the gameplay. @ Dice: Please think about the impact of your “improvements”.

    • Artdude90 07.10.12 at 09:36

yeah like in squad tdm throwing c4 from the building and camping with dao 12 and placing claymores is totally cool o.O It is totally fine in other modes but when you want a nice match those elements are just unfair and anoying but I also get your point. You think that every server will now have locks for certain weapons etc? I understand more like you create a match on DD.MM plus time and than it will happen. But will it lock the server for other players to join? If yes, I guess we will never find servers in the future ^^ It´s already hard to find one now

      • Phrodgar 07.10.12 at 10:45

I agree with you. In sdm it is very unfair, but I´ve seen a lot of admins who ban this in other mods like conquest for example, where it is a normal part of this game. And this is, what makes me tired to play this game and what I wanted to say with my post … :)

    • Pozioma 07.10.12 at 09:59

Yes that is true. What is the point of having a game where you cannot use all weapons, attachments etc.? If you guys do not know how to play against campers, shotguns, guys with C4 or RPG, you should play something else. I hate servers with limits, and never play on them.
In BF3 you can find solution against every single enemy.

      • Phrodgar 07.10.12 at 10:49

Ahh wonderbar! I see you understand what I want to say. That´s exactly rigth!

      • Merlin3180 07.15.12 at 11:03

I agree with you to a point, but there is very little you can do when on Grand Bizarre and the entire enemy team is grenading, rocketing, C4ing and mortaring the spawn point, explain how you deal with that. I do agree that admin abuse is rife on the owned servers and is mainly down to there inability to deal with more skilled players.

    • DannyCHEST 07.10.12 at 14:11

Mate I don’t think you understand.. This is for competitive play, leagues and matches, it’s not going to be like this for public servers. The allow tool won’t be on public servers, atleast not yet anyway.

    • JaYung 07.10.12 at 14:39

Dude you’re getting this completely wrong. These matches are not admin managed. These are fully player controlled so that we as players can setup matches between, oh lets say two clans, and be able to have a fully customisible game without the need to own a server.

      • XANDERscythe123 07.10.12 at 19:19

Actually DUDE, you need a server to create a match.

    • Bucketnate 07.10.12 at 16:00

Actually dude this is just for MATCHES you know like competitive games, between two gaming teams or clans, this isnt just server rules…

    • Garlock 07.10.12 at 17:23

There should be a ‘vote down’ button so that people who don’t know how to read aren’t speaking for the intelligent members of this community.

BTW Phrodgar, even if this WERE for every admin, just don’t play on the servers that you don’t like. Better yet, rent your OWN server and make it whatever you want.

    • Sllayr 07.10.12 at 17:58

dude you have go this all wrong, read the text again this is for competetive play this will be locked servers for example league matches like the esl ladder. This har absolutely nothing to do with public servers.

  • RoyalMarines1888 07.10.12 at 05:30

i think the engineer class should have another weapon and i think this would make the tanks lees wary to spawn kill and go on like 50 kill streaks, an IED. now i know your thinking mines, but the IED would be visible on radar but only when spotted and would have a small spike-like bar showing above ground, not too big though, and infantry would be able t set it off by standing on it. this would mean infantry would have to be more aware and it would also combat them spawn killing on maps and so on,like Operation Metro, Grand baazar, it could be made that it takes time for you to put it in its position, like 5 seconds or something making the player vulnerable and prone to being shot, i think it would make the game a bit better and more realistic. just a though, this matches thing looks great by the way.

    • SwannyMatt 07.10.12 at 07:35

Place mines in the rubble from blown up buildings, or push crates and stuff over mines you’ve already laid down. I’ve managed to get some experienced tank drivers with that. Also what works great is the shadow of the street lights. You can fit two mines close together perfectly in the shadow of the street light where it bulbs. Drivers almost never notice it. Finally placing 2 mines on the manhole covers is a good one too. Although better tank drivers are catching on to that one.

    • sycoticgamer15 07.10.12 at 21:31

Hey dude they ain’t experienced enough unless they can say two words… thermal vision… muahaha :P

  • CJCITYNJ 07.10.12 at 02:26

I need my m4a1 carbon to have more power and dice need to put there servers in the quick matches because every time when I push quick match what do I see I see a rent a server in a quick matches dice get it together put all server up first and push the rent a server back and when I choose team death that’s what I want to play and it keep putting me in rush and stuff like that it’s crazy and when is y’all going to make y’all servers have close quarters because I keep seeing those rent a server people having it but not y’all at all I pay $50 on this premium and y’all servers need to have all new maps on it so I guess if this is not done I guess I’m done playing battlefield and i just play something else.

    • Spectre Gadget 07.10.12 at 02:42

I use Server Browser almost exclusively now because I noticed the Quick Match was putting me into games and servers I didn’t want. Try it out, it takes a few extra minutes to do but you can see the playlist and everything so you don’t have to find new games every 15 minutes.

    • xDRUMZx 07.10.12 at 04:07

all in one sentence too. you rock.

  • Isolated Echo1 07.09.12 at 06:17

DICE really needs to put the MG-42 into Battlefield 3 for the support class. Anyone else agree?

    • dunk2k 07.09.12 at 19:58

MG-42!? the MG3 is the modern version – yes the MG3 was featured in Bad Company 2 and I loved that gun – 1000rpm of utter excellence, moar!

    • RoyalMarines1888 07.10.12 at 05:31

HELL YES! man i second that

  • cjffly 07.08.12 at 23:05

battleRecoder is to much work for DICE, I think it has tech problem. However, SPEC mode is just so easy, it’s already there, DICE just need to push a button and SPEC can work for us. Otherwise how is your trailer recoded?

    • RoyalMarines1888 07.10.12 at 05:32

i know dude, but they don’t seem to want to give us it :(, it would make things so much easier.

  • -Admiral-Vinnie 07.08.12 at 22:11

Aks people in the weekly pool about the SPEC mode and BFRecoder… u will see how badly they want it… Anyway, good intel so far and keep working on it!

  • BPA_Dobleclick 07.08.12 at 13:47

    Yeah thanks, but…

And if you’re planning to let us select allowed weapons and gear, please let us specify EACH AND EVERY WEAPON AND GEAR!! In the above screenshot you’re missing gear which is very frequently prohibited in some competitive leagues, such as IRNV and Radio Beacon for example.

  • ChickenScheisse 07.08.12 at 13:07

Common, guys… matchplay needs to have a spec mode and server-side demorecs. There will be no real competition without it. We are missing out on some really great matches and gameplays without it! Why cant you update the game with that? I love the game, but it will never be competitive without the spec mode.

  • Buptaboy 07.08.12 at 11:55

Sounds great but when is it actually launching?

  • Arithon 07.08.12 at 08:49

Get it through your thick skulls already, DICE:

Live it. Love it. Learn it. Until spectator mode is in the game, you don’t have a REAL competitive game. Fix it already.

  • bobTHEpony1 07.07.12 at 22:47

thats kool…. but we still want spectator _ pleezzzzz

  • ElessarGR 07.07.12 at 19:27

    Battlecorder or spectate?

  • ioben 07.07.12 at 09:01

Yesss… That is… But… Rosters don’t be only friend list or their platoon members, we can invite another platoon for match: “Platoon Matches”

  • Haimula 07.07.12 at 08:18

Cool but it’s all useless without spec mode and battlerecorder.

  • cjffly 07.07.12 at 07:19

    spectator, sry

  • cjffly 07.07.12 at 07:19

we want specter mode in Matches!!!!

  • PARAMVEER 07.07.12 at 06:42

This is a start but we need spectator mode. And some money pumped into some tournaments to get a scene started for BF3 E-Sports.
